Paperless Billing Notice

Thank you for choosing Hurley Medical Center for your healthcare needs. As of November 10th, 2024, Hurley Medical Center will enroll all patients in paperless billing to deliver a more secure, convenient, and eco-friendly way to view their patient statements. As a result, you will no longer receive bills in the mail.

When a new statement is ready for you to review, we will send a notification to your MyChart patient portal, email address, and, if enrolled, text message. If you need a paper copy of your statement, you can print it directly from your MyChart patient portal.

If you want to continue receiving paper statements, you can update your communication preferences in MyChart on November 11th, 2024.

On the mobile app:

  • Tap the Menu icon in the top left corner
  • Tap Billing Summary
  • Tap Cancel Paperless Billing

On the web portal:

  • Click Billing Summary
  • Click Cancel Paperless Billing

All patients should familiarize themselves with the terms of their insurance coverage. This will help you understand Hurley Medical Centers billing procedures and charges.

Price Transparency

In accordance with guidance provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Hurley Medical Center is pleased to present its full list of Standard Charges or “Chargemaster” for public viewing (see link below). This list contains thousands of services, supplies and pharmaceuticals that we are able to provide in caring for your medical needs.

The posting of our charges is intended to further engage patients into their selection of a healthcare provider. As you review our charges, Hurley Medical Center wishes to remind the community that the standard price list presented represents the full retail price of our services, much like the products you buy in the store have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price. However, these prices have little in common with what you or your insurance company may pay, as you will note from the contracted payment fees also provided. Medicare and other insurance companies only pay Hurley Medical Center the rates established in their specific payer contracts.

As a wide range of products and medical care are typically bundled into the price of a particular hospital service, including medications, supplies, tests and more, Hurley is also pleased to present below a link to our MyChart ‘Self Serve’ Estimate module to further assist patients in determining their personal out-of-pocket liabilities that they may owe. The difference between the hospital’s charge and an insurer’s contracted payment rate is often referred to as the contractual adjustment. You may see this identified on the notifications you receive from your insurance provider. Our charges less this adjustment leads to the “allowed amount”. Please note that it is the allowed amount that determines your out-of-pocket obligations.

Hurley remains committed to making sure that our patients receive necessary medical care with sensitivity to financial means. We also recognize that individuals have different levels of insurance coverage and different resources to pay for medical services. In keeping with our commitment to serve all members of the community, a reduced fee agreement will be considered when there is an inability to afford out-of-pocket amounts required by their insurance coverage. Please refer to our Financial Assistance & Discount Policy posted below for further explanations or clarifications on discounts you may be eligible for under our policy.

If You Have Health Insurance

Hurley Medical Center accepts most insurances from throughout the United States. If you would like to confirm your coverage, or if you have a question, we encourage you to call your insurance carrier directly, or you can call the Hurley Insurance Specialist Team at (810) 262-9096 (Option #3).

We will need a copy of your insurance card. Depending on the extent of your coverage and deductible requirements, you may be asked to pay a deposit. Your insurance plan may have special requirements such as a second surgical opinion or pre-certification for certain tests or procedures. It is your responsibility to make sure the requirements of your plan have been met. If your plan’s requirements are not followed, you may be financially responsible for all or part of the services rendered in the hospital. Some physician specialists may not participate in your health care plan and their services may not be covered.

If You Have No Insurance

If you have no insurance, Hurley Medical Center has a discount program designed to help those in need of financial support. Please refer to our Financial Assistance & Discount Policy posted above to assist you in determining your eligibility for financial relief. Hurley Medical Center maintains a staff of professional insurance service specialists to help you in arranging payment of your hospital account. If you do not have insurance, need counseling or assistance of any kind in meeting your financial obligation to Hurley Medical Center, please call (810) 262-9260 (Option #3), Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm.

Your Hospital Bill

Hurley Medical Center is responsible for submitting bills to your insurance company and will do everything possible to expedite your claim. You should remember that your policy is a contract between you and your insurance company, and that you have the final responsibility for payment of your hospital bill.

We have several payment options available to assist you in paying your bill. Your bill reflects all of the services you receive during your stay at Hurley Medical Center. Charges fall into two categories:

  1. Basic daily rate which includes your room, meals, nursing care and housekeeping
  2. Charges for special services which include items your physician orders for you, such as x-rays or laboratory tests

If you have certain tests or treatments in the hospital, you may receive bills from physicians you did not see in person. These bills are for professional services rendered by these doctors in diagnosing and interpreting test results while you are a patient. Pathologists, radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists and other specialists performing these services are required to submit separate bills. If you have questions about these bills, please call the number printed on the billing statement.

Hurley Medical Center maintains a staff of professional insurance service specialists to help you in arranging payment of your hospital account. If you do not have insurance or need counseling or assistance of any kind in meeting your financial obligation to Hurley Medical Center, please call (810) 262-9255 (Option 2), Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
