A Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care

Every pregnancy is unique, but at Hurley they all have one thing in common: the best care around. We offer the area’s highest level of obstetric and gynecological services. Plus, Hurley was recently designated as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. That means we’ve met the criteria established for safe and effective specialty care, while keeping down costs–all things you want to consider when planning a family. Learn more about Blue Distinction Centers.

First-time parent or experienced, the choice of where to have your baby is one of the most important decisions you’ll face. By choosing Hurley Medical Center, you can be confident you’ve made the best decision for you and your newborn.

From Day One to Day 27,375

Nothing’s as exciting as bringing a new life into the world. At Hurley Medical Center, we’re proud of the part we play in approximately 3,000 births a year. From textbook pregnancies to high-risk births and everything in between, our obstetricians, nursing teams and Certified Nurse Midwives have seen it all.

The team at Hurley is the first glimpse of life outside the womb for our Hurley babies. From day one, these dedicated medical professionals are committed to providing optimal care for newborns and their moms. Hurley offers the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), giving patients the best chance for a positive outcome when the unexpected happens.

For babies born too early or critically ill, our NICU is more than just a stand-out medical service. It’s a way of increasing your baby’s chances of survival–sometimes by as high as 20% over what other hospitals predict for them. When it comes to these fragile lives pulling through, the odds go up in their favor the moment they come through our doors. Consider those statistics. Consider that we have the area’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a ground-breaking Pediatric Emergency Department, and the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, and you’ll see there’s no better place to come into the world than Hurley Medical Center.

Ensure a Special Delivery

When it’s time for delivery, you’ll be settled as comfortably as possible into one of nine Labor & Delivery rooms large enough to accommodate one or two support people for the much-anticipated arrival of your baby. If all goes as planned, you’ll recover in the same room, your newborn at your side, before being transferred to the Mother-Baby Unit, where your postpartum care begins.

The Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine

Patients with high-risk pregnancies turn to The Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine for expert help in navigating their special circumstances. Surrounded by a network sensitive to the unique challenges you face on your journey to starting a family, you’ll be closely monitored throughout your term. The staff of specialized obstetrical care providers at The Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine can also help with preconception consultation and genetic counseling when necessary. We partner with Genesys Regional Medical Center to provide the following in perinatal care at our downtown Flint campus:

  • Targeted or Level II ultrasound
  • Consultations at your perinatologist‘s office and in the hospital
  • Ultrasound diagnostics
  • Non-stress tests
  • Chronic disease management
  • Antenatal fetal surveillance

Hurley NICU

The birth of your baby is one of the most significant experiences of your life. At Hurley, we try to ensure that it is also safe and rewarding. But each year nearly 1,000 babies are born too early or critically ill.

Whether they come into the world at Hurley or at other hospitals throughout the area, chances are they’ll be sent here for care. Why? Because our Level III NICU, the highest-level in the region, inspires an even higher level of hope. The staff have all the qualifications necessary to give fragile lives a fighting chance, and they will fight right alongside your baby. Neonatologists, who specialize in caring for sick or premature newborns; perinatologists, who handle high risk pregnancies; NICU nurses; nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists represent a skill pool that can bring about positive outcomes in crisis situations.

Just as you want what’s best for your baby, we want you to receive the best healthcare imaginable as you embark on this amazing journey. To schedule an appointment with our OB/GYN Clinic or for diagnostics, testing, and/or laboratory information, contact us at 810.262.9751.

Blue Distinction Centers

Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for providers located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Each provider’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Providers in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s innetwork status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
