Getting Started
Why Consider Bariatric Surgery
Obesity can lead to other serious health problems such as heart disease, sleep disorders, certain types of cancer and restriction of basic physical movements. Obesity also affects emotional health, which may lead to lowered self-confidence, withdrawal from social activities and depression. Bariatric surgery offers many people the chance to change their lives through weight loss. Surgical weight loss options include gastric bypass surgery, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. The surgical weight loss options present many opportunities for people facing obesity.
For some, diets, exercise and weight loss drugs may not bring about the desired degree of weight loss or restore the quality of life individuals are seeking. Other bariatric surgery candidates may have previously enlisted the help of psychiatrists or counselors and still experienced setbacks and feelings of frustration and disappointment in their quest to achieve permanent weight loss.
In addition to weight loss, bariatric surgery often prompts other physical and emotional benefits. Many patients also experience lower blood pressure and relief from sleep apnea and acid reflux disease. Post surgery, patients report no or lessened joint pain and others no longer suffer from diabetes. Bariatric surgery patients also experience renewed emotional health, often reporting that they’ve not only regained mobility, but reclaimed their lives.
Are You A Candidate?
Candidates for bariatric surgery are over the age of 18, 100 or more pounds overweight and haven’t had success with more conservative weight loss methods such as diets, exercise and behavior modification. Bariatric surgery may be part of the solution that you’ve been looking for. Bariatric surgical options include gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy or adjustable gastric banding. At Hurley Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, we have a dedicated, multi-disciplinary bariatric medical team that will work with you each step of the way along your weight loss journey.
Your body mass index (BMI) and guidelines from the National Institute of Health (BMI calculator) are used as a guide to decide if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery. BMI is accurate in determining the degree of obesity. It considers an individual’s weight in proportion to their height and can be used for both men and women.
- A BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 indicates a healthy weight
- A BMI from 25.0 through 29.9 indicates an overweight condition
- A BMI from 30 through 39.9 indicates moderate obesity
- A BMI of 40 or above indicates severe obesity
Surgical weight loss candidates usually have a BMI of 35 or greater (typically 100 or more pounds overweight), and other health issues related to the excessive weight, which may include:
- Diabetes
- High Cholesterol
- Hypertension
- Arthritis
- Degenerative Joint Disease
- Gastroesophageal Reflux
- Urinary Stress Incontinence
