Our interventional radiologists use minimally invasive techniques that use imaging to guide instruments through the body to the affected area. This alternative procedure means less risk, pain and recovery time for patients, no need for anesthesia, and the ability to do most procedures on an outpatient basis. It also allows physicians to provide treatment before critical damage occurs, which translates into less hospitalization, better outcomes, and lower costs.

Conditions that may be diagnosed or treated using interventional radiology:

Interventional radiology may be used to provide biopsies, drain abscesses, place ports, help remove kidney stones and dissolve blood clots. More complex procedures include treatments for peripheral artery disease and traumatic hemorrhaging, cerebral (brain) aneurysms, women’s health issues, cancer, urological conditions, osteoporosis, and end-stage renal disease.

Relief from uterine fibroid pain

For women over the age of 35, 20-40% of them develop uterine fibroids. Most women have no symptoms, but for others, uterine fibroids are very painful and need medical attention. UAE is a new approach in treating fibroid tumors, which are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. This procedure is performed by a Hurley Medical Center Interventional Radiologist who is trained in the use of X-rays and has 30 years’ experience performing more than 250 of these state-of-the-art, life-changing procedures.
