Midwifery Care for Teens

Ever sensitive to the concerns and apprehensions of girls on the verge of becoming young women, certified nurse midwives can be a good fit as health providers for pre-teens and teenagers. Using a comfortable and educational approach to adolescent care, CNMs can explain the many changes that occur during puberty. From first periods to first sexual experiences and handling peer pressure, certified nurse midwives provide woman-to-woman education, support and information to ensure teens understand how their bodies work.

Midwifery Care for Adults

Most people associate midwives with maternity care, not realizing it’s only a portion of what they do. CNMs provide top-quality care for women throughout their lifetime. They help women of all ages understand their choices, and they participate in ongoing education and research to give their patients the most up-to-date options in healthcare. CNMs can recognize a range of health issues, from routine female infections, common colds and strep throat, to nutrition and mental health. They can prescribe medication and work with all members of the healthcare team to ensure that a specialist is available should a patient need surgery or treatment for a serious health concern.

Many health risks can be modified by making lifestyle changes. Certified nurse midwives give you the guidance you need to establish healthy habits. They can walk you through your options for birth control if this is something you want and provide a peaceful, safe, supported and empowered atmosphere for you to receive gynecologic care. CNMs have the education and experience to tailor your healthcare experience based on current research and what you value most. Their services have never been more important.

Fertility and Preconception Counseling

Educating you on how your body works and supporting its natural processes are what midwifery care is all about. It is important to us that you understand your menstrual cycle as a first step in fertility awareness. Whether your goal is to prevent pregnancy or achieve it, a certified nurse midwife can be an expert partner in attaining what you want from your office visits.

As soon as you start thinking about becoming pregnant, Hurley Health Services certified nurse midwives recommend that you make an appointment to help pave the way for a healthy pregnancy. In a private, sensitive and informative session, patients will receive a thorough physical exam, including personal and family health histories, and any necessary labs. This first session is a good opportunity to discuss topics such as: fertility, conception, nutrition, vitamins and other supplements, exercise, work, environmental hazards, avoidance of toxins, stress relief and emotional health. If any problems are identified at this visit, they are either addressed or evaluated for referral.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Support

Of course your certified nurse midwife can help you decide when and if pregnancy is right for you. Working within your chosen timeframe, your CNM will help you prepare for a healthy pregnancy, supporting you from the very beginning, through childbirth and your baby’s first month. Our CNMs deliver at Hurley Medical Center, giving patients immediate access to the area’s highest level NICU if any complications arise.

In addition to providing care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, certified nurse midwives can educate you about family planning and contraception. In the event of a miscarriage, they will provide follow-up that includes compassionate emotional support. CNMs place a strong focus on their patients’ emotional and social well-being in addition to the physical aspects of care.
